DE LOTUSBLOEM De lotusbloem (Nelumbo Nucifera/Heilige lotus) is zeer betekenisvol door haar betoverende schoonheid maar ook door vele symbolische betekenissen. Lotusbloemen hebben invloed gehad in culturen over de hele wereld vanuit de oudheid tot heden. Zij komt uit India en Indonesië maar groeide ook in Amerika, Australië, Japan en Thailand. Als men zorgt dat de wortelstokken niet kunnen bevriezen, kan de lotus ook in een gematigd klimaat, zoals in Nederland overleven. Men kan Lotus gebruiken bij aromatherapie, op het spirituele- en psychische vlak in de vorm van oliën. Boeddha is geboren uit een lotusbloem en wordt meestal op een lotustroon afgebeeld. De lotus en haar symboliek: Heel de schepping is uit haar ontstaan, zij gaat bij zonsopgang open en ’s avonds sluit zij zich weer. De lotus is de bloem van het licht. Zij komt tot bloei door het water en de zon, zij symboliseert de ziel, vuur en water, het beginsel van alles. Ook wordt zij in verband gebracht met zon, maan, geboorte en dood. Zij komt tevoorschijn uit een moerassige bodem en bereikt door haar schoonheid in sommige gevallen een goddelijk aanzien. In het Hindoeïsme en het Boeddhisme symboliseert de lotus zuiverheid, welzijn, aanzien, succes en wedergeboorte. In het oude Perzië kenmerkte zij het licht en de zon. Bij de Egyptenaren werd zij gezien als zonnegodin. De Grieken en Romeinen zagen haar als de godin van de liefde en vruchtbaarheid. Bij de Chinezen is zij een teken van zuiverheid, vrede, de zomer, het vrouwelijke in alles. Zij draagt tegelijkertijd  knoppen, bloemen en zaadbeginsel en wordt ook wel gezien als symbool van  het verleden, het  heden en de  toekomst. In India symboliseert de lotus de godin van schoonheid en geluk; Lakshmi.
